Camarillo Western Classic Celebrates 25th Anniversary!

1D Award Winners
Congratulations to Fastest Time of the Classic
award winner Donna Irvin (above left),
Grand Champion Anna Montagano (right of Sharon)
and the other 1D award winners of the Western Classic!

Silver and Purple were the theme colors for the 25th Camarillo Western Barrel Racing Classic with what some contestants called the best Classic ever! The new arena at the Rolling Hills Equestrian Center in Corning, California added additional stalls, parking amenities and a new arena large enough to set a standard WPRA pattern. Ground by Jack Deniz provided terrific footing and the scene was set for Fun and Fast Times!

Donna Irvin from Team Camarillo and Black Hawk College traveled the farthest from Galva, Illinois and was rewarded with the “In Pursuit of Excellence Award” presented in memory of my favorite horse Seven, by setting the fast time of 17.584 in round one. Donna also finished 3rd in the 1D Average riding her Frenchman bred six year-old gelding T-Bird. Other special awards were given to 4D Champion Brenda Simlick in memory of Kalyn Brooks, former Classic 4D Champion and Cowgirl Hall of Fame Inductee. Pamela Miller was the Target Race Champion with a tight .005 second separating her first two runs. Junior race winner was Vanessa Madsen and the Senior Division was won by Anna Montagano. The Appreciation Award was presented to Diane Carter.

Anna Montagano
For the second consecutive year, congratulations
to Western Classic Grand Champion
Anna Montagano riding her (appropriately named)
four year-old mare Carrying on Legacy!

For the second year in a row, Nevada Cowgirl Anna Montagano won the Grand Championship. Anna’s 2015 victory was celebrated aboard her 13 year-old mare Lolly. Anna defended her Classic Grand Championship this year riding Carrying on Legacy, by CB Flirting with Nick. This filly is appropriately named as representing Anna's back-to-back wins and her consistent performance to carry her once again to the 2016 Grand Championship. Anna's remarkable four year-old mare, affectionately known as Bam, is already a futurity standout in her own right. Anna and Carrying on Legacy will travel in December back to Oklahoma for the prestigious BFA Futurity competition where they competed in the Juvenile division last year.

With her signature enthusiasm and consistent performance, the 2D was won by Sharra Deniz, popular owner and producer of Run2Win, aboard her seven year-old gelding Blazen Red Firewater. The 3D was won by Jessica Crump riding her five year-old gelding Cooper who also gives credit to her family for their “amazing” support and to her parents for helping her to “be the best I can be.” The 4D was won by Brenda Simlick aboard Classy Fritz, a family raised and trained seven year-old mare. Brenda’s dad, Bob Pelton, was also entered in the Classic reminding us how important family involvement is to the success of our event.

With over $50,000 in awards, door prizes and cash payout, a Riders Reception celebrating the rich history of the 25-year event included a photos essay celebration of past champions and Cowgirl Hall of Fame videos of Kalyn Brooks documenting her remarkable life. We topped Saturday night with 180 riders in the Run2Win/$1,500 added jackpot. The Classic was full of excitement for all to enjoy a great weekend of fun, family and great competition.
